EAMES PLASTIC CHAIR: THE FIRST PLASTIC CHAIR IN HISTORY

There’s a chair on which we’ve sat at least once. If there’s one thing that can never be missing in a doctor’s waiting room or in an office, that’s a Plastic Chair, a 1950s-style chair, with or without arms, and which can be joined laterally with another chair.

The Eames Plastic Chair is the first real plastic chair which was awarded the second prize at the “Low cost” competition organized by the MoMA in 1948, and which since 1950 has been mass-produced (at the end of the post you’ll find the link to Vitra, the current producer).

It’s the first real project conceived to make everybody’s life more comfortable and especially easier, because the Eames Plastic Chair has been conceived to be low cost, and that’s why its spread has been rapid and global.

The base of the Eames Plastic Chair is intertwined metal and draws inspiration from the Eiffel Tower.
It was designed by the Eames spouses, Charles and Ray, to be resistant and light.
