THE MAGNUM AGENCY AND THE CINEMA: AN EXHIBITION ON THE GREAT PHOTOGRAPHERS AND THE CINEMA

The Magnum agency and the cinema. I adore photography, and when I have the chance to admire the photographs from the archive of the historical and glorious Magnum photography agency, I can’t resist and I must see them.

From July 2nd to November 13th 2016 Lucca will host the exhibition “Magnum sul set. I grandi fotografi e il cinema” (The Magnum agency on film sets. The great photographers and the cinema), which will show 116 photos taken on the set of 12 masterpieces of the cinema by the greatest Magnum’s photographers.

An event you can’t miss.

This exhibition will display shots which will make you reflect on the relationship between reality and fiction, and between truth and dream, because being a Magnum’s photographer has nothing to do with the shots taken on film sets, taken in order to promote movies.
Shots taken by the Magnum’s photographers are a creative and free study to tell the protagonists of the history of the cinema.
The close relationship between the Magnum agency and the cinema began with Robert Capa, one of the founders of the Magnum, when his friendships made him enter Hollywood.
A relationship that allowed Capa to make a journey through the history of the cinema.
I talked about Robert Capa some time ago on the occasion of the exhibition “Robert Capa in Italia 1943-1944” (“Robert Capa in Italy 1943-1944”).

The photos of the exhibition were taken on the set of the following movies: “Limelight”, “The Seven Year Itch”, “Rebel without a Cause”, “Moby Dick”, “Le procès”, “Planet of the Apes”, “Zabriskie Point” and many more.
A gallery of great movie stars including Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne, Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, Gregory Peck, Charlton Heston, James Dean, Romi Schneider, Klaus Kinski, Dustin Hoffman, and John Malkovich.

The Magnum agency was founded in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, David “Chim” Seymour, George Rodger and William Vandivert.
In a short time the Magnum became the most prestigious photography agency in the world, for which the best photographers in the world worked. For example Elliott Erwitt, who took the photos which became the icons of the 20th century, and many more who made and are still making the history of the photography, such as the famous Steve Mc Curry.
