Bologna is famous for its colonnades that sweep through the historical centre for more than 38 km.
Their origin is in part attributable to the city’s large growth in the late Middle ages and to the willingness to make the most of the architectural space in order to increase the size of homes; they expanded the upper floors, developing commercial and artisan businesses on the ground floor.

Bologna is also known for its noble towers hailing from the Middle Ages: it is estimated that there were more than 90-100 in this period.

Bologna is also the city of underground canals and of an extremely old university.
Many religious buildings characterise the city with Basilicas, Churches and Sanctuaries, some dating back to the 12th century.
