van Gogh in Rome
Born in Holland on 30 March 1853, Vincent van Gogh was a sensitive artist with a tormented life.
Famous are his fits of madness, his long stays in the psychiatric hospital of Saint Paul in Provence, the episode of the severed ear, as well as the tragic epilogue of his life, which ended on 29 July 1890, at only thirty-seven years of age, with a suicide.
Despite a difficult life, Van Gogh’s works are masterpieces that still amaze today, accompanied by intense writings: the famous ‘Letters’ to his brother Theo.
The Dutch artist invented a unique style, which made him the most famous painter in the history of art, and with this exhibition in Rome you can learn all the details of his work and life.
THE VAN GOGH EXHIBITION IN ROME
The loan from the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo offers an important selection of works documenting Van Gogh’s entire artistic career.
Helene Kröller-Müller, between 1907 and 1938, put together a collection without equal in Europe, which included paintings by Picasso, Gris, Mondrian, Signac, Seurat, Redon, Cranach, Gauguin, Renoir, Latour and, of course, Van Gogh. She was the first to appreciate the work of the Dutch painter, to whom she felt bound, recognising in his art her own personal spirituality.
It was Helene Kröller-Müller, who exhibited Van Gogh’s paintings in Europe and the United States, who made Van Gogh known, and in this exhibition it is the masterpieces from the collection that bring us closer to this artist.
