What to do in Madrid. A few steps away from the Prado Museum there’s the Casón del Buen Retiro, that is to say the ballroom of the ancient royal palace, which houses the special section of the Prado Museum, with its 19th–century art collection.
The collection of artworks housed at the Casón Buen Retiro covers all the 19th century, from Neoclassicism to Romanticism, and arrives until Impressionism manifested itself.
All the major Spanish artists at that time are there.
The Museum lies inside the Buen Retiro Park, one of those places you must see if you visit Madrid. It’s a large park, loved especially by the inhabitants of Madrid who usually spend here their outdoor days.
The park was built in 1630 as a gift from the Count-Duke of Olivares to the King Philip IV, and inside it there are both the Casón del Buen Retiro and the Theatre of the Buen Retiro.
Only after the Spanish revolution of 1868 the park was opened to the public.
