PALAZZINA DI CACCIA OF STUPINIGI: HISTORY

The Palazzina di Caccia of Stupinigi was designed by Filippo Juvarra for Victor Amadeus II of Savoy.

The building was conceived to be used as a hunting lodge and a place where to organize parties, and the first formal hunt in the surroundings of Stupinigi dates back to 1731.
Works lasted until the end of the 18^th century, and over the years thanks to numerous architects the building was enlarged and enriched with decorations.
Filippo Juvarra personally chose painters, cabinetmakers and upholsterer and supervised each phase of the works, by providing indications, sketches and drawings.
Thanks to Juvarra’s indications and his sketches and drawings, the works of the Palazzina lasted throughout the 18th century.

Over the centuries many historical figures stayed at the Palazzina di Caccia of Stupinigi: Emperor Joseph II, Paul I of Russia, Ferdinand I and Caroline of Bourbon, and even Napoleon Bonaparte.
Among the most important celebrations held here you must remember the marriage between Maria Teresa of Savoy and Charles Philippe, Count of Artois, in 1773.

PALAZZINA DI CACCIA OF STUPINIGI: DESCRIPTION AND INTERIORS

A visit to the Palazzina di Caccia of Stupinigi must include the oval salon, frescoed with paintings depicting hunting scenes. From the salon you enter the royal apartments and the apartments for the guests.

The theme of hunting is everywhere, while furniture consists of original pieces, made by the most important artists and craftsmen of Piedmont.

The building houses also a chapel dedicated to Saint Hubert and the Portrait Gallery displaying portraits of some members of the House of Savoy.
The Parco Naturale di Stupinigi surrounding the Palazzina, instead, makes this place even more charming. The park is constituted by a vast area of 1,700 hectares and was designed in 1724 on French model, and later became an English-style garden.
