Museum-Ship RICKMER RICKMERS
How do you live on a sailing boat?
This is the right museum to understand how you can live on an old-time ship.
The RICKMER RICKMERS, built in 1896, is a museum where to experience life on a sailing boat and have experiences of a sailor of the 19th century, by identifying with captain Hermann-Hinrich Ahlers.
In 1896, the captain sailed to Hong Kong with a crew consisting of two helmsmen, a cook, a carpenter, a sailmaker, a stoker, 14 sailors and four ship’s boys. The ship sailed on stormy seas and returned loaded with rice and bamboo.
This is one of the main centers of contemporary art in Germany, and houses the House of Contemporary Art and the House of Photography, in addition to a hall for exhibitions of contemporary artists and the Falckenberg Collection. The two steel-and-glass structures, that once were a market, were turned into a place of culture.
The gallery arranges exhibitions of artists the likes of Marc Chagall and Andy Warhol.
