Maria Lassnig e Marisa Merz. Golden lionesses
Maria Lassnig and Marisa Merz share the Golden Lion for lifetime achievement awarded during the 55th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. The depiction of the female body lies at the centre of their art. In the case of Maria Lassnig this is actually a matter of self-portraiture “in a state of restlessness, excitement and desperation” as the motivation for the prize puts it. In the case of Marisa Merz it is Worth stressing how, within the Arte Povera movement, she stood out “for her reflection about the sphere of domestic and female space”. A research that she continued over the years, often alone, resulting in images that are seemingly archaic and primitive. “In these contemporary icons”, states the motivation, “stylised faces emerge from the surface like divine apparitions”.
